Spina bifida corrected before birth on Samuel Armas, 1999F surgery

Infant pain capability is now so well established and studied that the specialty of pediatric anesthesiology has evolved to help tiny babies tolerate surgical interventions.

Consider how mainstream medicine acknowledges that newborns (including preemies) feel pain: circumcisions are now routinely performed after topical numbing and the World Health Organization recommends pain relief for the mandatory “heel sticks” drawing the child’s blood after delivery.

Medical researchers continue to test and analyze the kinds of pain-techniques that are most beneficial on tiny patients, leading to the increased surgical successes on children before and after birth. (Read about the photo here and here and developments in spina bifida here.)

In fact, science now knows that

between 20-30 weeks gestation, the highest density of pain receptors per square inch of skin develop in the unborn–five times the pain sensitivity that any child or adult will ever be capable of.

However, the developing unborn child has not developed the mechanisms needed to modulate and tone down pain, because that “pain-dampening” development occurs around 40 weeks gestation (term delivery) –and afterword!

Only the abortion industry wants to perpetuate the myth that unborn children are non-feeling and impervious to the experience of being dismembered. One wonders whether abortionists and their staff personally reject anesthesia for their own newborns and preemies that undergo medical procedures?

PAIN-CAPABLE LEGISLATION
The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) led the charge to end partial-birth abortions –a gruesome method used on a child exiting the birth canal. In NRLCs overall plan to systematically dismantle the U.S. Supreme Court’s enduring support for abortion, they have crafted legislation presenting evidence that unborn children feel pain.

Kansas is one of the few states banning abortions at 22 weeks gestation (20 weeks post-fertilization) due to the recognized pain-capability of the unborn. While legal injunctions to the Idaho, Georgia and Arizona pain-capable laws have predictably been secured, we hope that state appeals of those decisions will be taken up for review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

HR 1797 is a federal bill, spearheaded by NRLC, that would ban elective abortions at 20 weeks fetal age, due to pain-capability. The measure is co-sponsored by all four members of the Kansas delegation to the U.S. House  and by both Kansas U.S Senators in a companion bill. The House Judiciary Committee could vote on the bill before mid-June, with action by the full House any time thereafter. For more details, go here.

The issue of whether aborted children could experience the pain of abortion had not been a specific consideration in the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling. In that era, surgery for preemies, infants and toddlers relied on taping the child to the surgical table to immobilize the body so that the needed procedure could be performed!

Can our country– where hospitals seek the best way to protect newborns from the pain of a needle prick –continue to allow the horrific dismemberment of pain-feeling children inside abortion clinics?

WASHINGTON —  The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to take up a major pro-life bill — the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 3) — on or about Wednesday, May 4, 2011.

National Right to Life urges you to promptly contact your U.S. House representative  to urge him or her to support H.R. 3, and to oppose all amendments that may be offered by opponents of the bill.  Go here for an easy way to send a brief note to our 4 U.S. reps.

Currently, there is a patchwork of different federal laws that restrict federal funding of abortion.  However, many of these restrictions (such as the well-known Hyde Amendment, which applies to the federal Medicaid program) expire every year — which forces the pro-life side to re-fight the same battles in Congress, year after year.

Moreover, in a number of federal programs — notably, some major new programs created by the massive Obama health care law in 2010 — federal subsidies for abortion are currently permissible under law.  H.R. 3 would replace this leaky patchwork with a permanent, government-wide prohibition on federal funding of abortion and federal subsidies for health plans that cover abortion.

The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act is sponsored by Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-Il.), the co-chairs of the House Pro-Life Caucus.  Click here for list of co-sponsors of the bill.

KANSAS DEFUNDING ON TRACK
Meanwhile, back in Topeka, the state budget currently contains a provision redirecting Title X federal family planning funds AWAY from Planned Parenthood and to state health clinics.  No women will be without pregnancy-related services, and even better, approximately $300,000 in tax moneys will be augmenting full-service medical care for lower income men and women of all ages–instead of underwriting Planned Parenthood.

kingToday’s (Tues. Nov. 3)  Washington Post headline above (written before the great election returns came in, which makes it even better) warms the cockles of my heart!

Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Planned Parenthood and NARAL, like the King of England watching William Wallace, can’t believe it!

Of course, the fight is far from over, but while the swords clash, something strikes me again that I’ve long known: the millions spent by Obama-Care opponents on regular lobbying groups are misplaced.  It is the poor, but effective, grassroots groups like ours (that are so busy on the front lines that we’ve barely had time to send out our Fall fundraising letters), and our good friends, the Tea Partiers, that are really making a difference!

braveheart6 So, hey, America, OVER HEEEERRREEE!

If you want to defeat Obama/Pelosi/Reid-Care, then invest in  the truth uniquely offered by pro-life efforts that, as the headline suggests, may well end up being the ONLY issue that, since it crosses party lines, can truly defeat this horrible abortion/death laden so-called “health care” bill!

Abortionist Carhart at Oct. 29 D.C. Health Care Reform Rally, photo by Wendy Wright, CWA

Late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart, under investigation in Nebraska for performing abortions while medicated and with unsterilized equipment, was caught attending a D.C. rally today for health care reform.

Carhart knows what the secular media, National Right to Life Committee and the US Bishops’ pro-life conference all understand– that all committee-passed health reform bills absolutely fund abortion.

Aug 5,2009 By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR, WASHINGTON.(AP) – Health care legislation before Congress would allow a new government-sponsored insurance plan to cover abortions, a decision that would affect millions of women and recast federal policy on the divisive issue.

The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) has issued  a detailed memorandum that explains how the proposed public plan and the proposed premium subsidy programs would be funded, and why the Hyde Amendment would not apply to the proposed new programs.  (more…)

Heads Up America: Death Panel Alert!

Kansas City is home to the Center for Practical Bioethics, but it has national influence on end-of-life issues, e.g. their work with former Sen. John Danforth resulted in the Patient Self-Determination Act which forced every health care provider in America to offer all patients living wills.  The living will/advanced directive the Center produces and pushes here has refusal of artificially provided nutrition and hydration as the default, unless it is crossed out and initialed.  Their group was recently hailed as the reason Kansas City’s end-of-life costs are “significantly” cheaper than other cities around the nation.

Knowing that, and sensing their involvement in the end-of-life issues in national health care reform legislation, we attended a talk by their CEO, Myra Christopher on October 1st at the Kansas City Rotary Club, entitled “End of Life as a Component of Health Care Reform: In or Out”.

We transcribed it from audio and sent it to the Robert Powell Center for Medical Ethics which is the end-of-life arm of the National Right to Life Committee, our national affiliate. (more…)
