Whether we face economic downturns or not, abortion (including embryonic destruction) is the civil rights issue of our time, and must not be shoved aside. Bishop Desmond Tutu says, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
AP quotes Peter Brownlie, head of the Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri, that annual legislative disputes about abortion are, “a waste of taxpayer money and legislative time… [serving] to help anti-abortion groups raise money.”
If Brownlie sincerely meant lawmakers shouldn’t spend any time on abortion-related issues, Planned Parenthood, themselves, would stop sending lobbyists to the Capitol, stop sending out political action emails, and stop sponsoring fund-raising events. And that won’t be happening; last year, Brownlie complained to the Kansas City Star, “with the economy in bad shape we’re concerned about fund-raising.”
Abortion is a grave injustice– “terminating” certain humans based on size and development– even the color of their mother’s skin. LiveAction films caught Planned Parenthood accepting donations to terminate black babies only. Planned Parenthood is specifically targeting black and hispanic neighborhoods for their new supercenters.
Planned Parenthood annually aborts over three hundred thousand babies nationally, and receives over $300 million in federal tax funds. In 2009, Gov. Parkinson gave Brownlie’s group over $320,000 in tax payer funding and then completely removed tax grants to truly non-profit Kansas crisis pregnancy centers.
We will continue to support efforts by lawmakers like Senator Tim Huelskamp, to de-fund Planned Parenthood, because it is a matter of justice.
