Yesterday, abortion supporters at our nation’s Capitol lobbied against health reforms that exclude tax- funding for elective abortions. Signs from the YWCA- generated attendees said, “No more hangers, ever.” Probably because the protesters can’t (with a straight face) carry signs saying, “We love & respect our abortionists.”
Consider Nebraska partial-birth-abortionist, LeRoy Carhart, who maintains a current Kansas medical license. When Carhart began doing abortions in Nebraska, he worked under an office manager who reported him to the state for falsifying abortion records, failing to follow anti-infection protocols, and erratic behavior, including falling asleep and talking on the phone during surgery.
He escaped disciplinary action, allowing him to acquire more medical licenses in other states (including Kansas) and opened his own clinic in suburban Omaha. He later was exposed as using fetal tissue from his clinic in experiments at the state university, where he had obtained a volunteer position.
Carhart does late-term abortions in several states, and officially joined the George Tiller staff in 2003. He escaped any sanctions for his actions in the 2005 abortion death of Christin Gilbert at Tiller’s clinic, due in large part to Tiller’s close friendship with the state medical board director, Larry Buening, and then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. Carhart also successfully evaded testifying to a citizen grand jury about the death.
Complaints have been forwarded this fall to the Nebraska state authorities based on allegations from Carhart staffers that he worked while medicated and did abortions with unwashed instruments.
Whereas Tiller’s website gave the façade of legitimacy, Carhart’s website is worse than embarrassing, and may explain why out-of-state clients aren’t flying in to him for late-term abortions. The website section “our doctor” gives no professional information, but merely shows a photo of Carhart getting an award from Gloria Steinem and pals.
Most of the website topic sections are empty, with broken links, or google pages– one from 1997! The second item listed after the directory consists of 4 photos of abortion “protestors“(sic). The “condoms by mail” section shows some effort– color fonts are used for the flavor names.
Women who ignore his pathetic website have got to be dismayed when visiting his shabby clinic.
Even today’s New York Times’ sympathetic report on Carhart couldn’t bear to show the clinic’s exterior— using a long-distance shot taken from a car, and showing more of the car than the building!
A video tour of his facility by a local TV station revealed open trash containers in surgical rooms–a violation of medical sanitation standards.
Carhart bragged to Wichita media he’d be taking George Tiller’s place in Kansas by Dec. 1, but he does not have a political machine, hospital privileges, or the special friendship with the Wichita D.A. that Tiller had.
Neither does he have the overt and covert campaign funding systems to be a factor in the local 2010 races, or to stop Sam Brownback from becoming governor and enforcing the Kansas late-term abortion ban.
