Julie Burkhart

In what she no doubt thought was a clever entry Friday on her TrustWomen abortion advocacy website, Julie Burkhart called for the new Kansas Office of the Repealer to delete abortion ‘informed-consent’ requirements from 1997, as well as four new abortion-regulating laws enacted this July.

Burkhart, the former top aide to late-term abortionist George Tiller, left Kansas soon after the state Healing Arts Board filed to remove Tiller’s license in Dec. 2008. Burkhart is now itching to set up a new Wichita abortion clinic. She may be dreaming about reclaiming the approximately 2,500 non-late-term abortions that were done annually in Tiller’s clinic until his death 2 ½ years ago. At an average abortion cost of $500-$600, the clinic could gross $1.5 million.

For Burkhart to call for repealing every law constraining unethical conduct at her hoped-for abortion clinic is like a notorious slum landlord calling for repeal of home safety inspections and fair housing laws under the claim that such regulations impede providing more affordable housing to the poor.

Although Burkhart began her ‘sore loser’ list of complaints with a tongue-in-cheek premise, she was dead serious about these assertions:

  • abortion helps poor women;
  • abortion is part of ‘maternal’ care;
  • abortion of disabled children is economically beneficial;
  • private abortion clinics should not be held to the same patient protections required of surgery centers and hospitals;
  • new abortion regulations have been enacted against the will of Kansans.

None of those claims are true. Kansas pro-life laws were certainly not whisked into place by whim! The health insurance law operated for decades in the eastern part of the state.  (more…)

Down & out Mila Means(KWCH photo)

Admitting that being the “poorest doctor in the state”  drove her bid to try opening an abortion business in Wichita, Kansas-licensed practitioner Mila Means was dubbed “not the ideological warrior many expected” in a New York Times profile this weekend.

Poor Mila, broke and in hock,(see this article) went to the stellar training center for “abortion care” (as our opponents call it) –the Central Family Medicine medicaid clinic in the lowest income area of Kansas City, Kansas, also doing business Aid for Women.

Since the late 1980s, this clinic has been the incubator for abortion malpractice and professional misbehavior by failed practitioners, who also were ‘broke and in hock’: Joseph Manley, Malcolm Knarr, Sherman Zaremski, Kristin Neuhaus, Krishna Rajanna. (Note: state medical board actions are not yet online for these practitioners, but KFL has the records.)

Although Means had not reported ever “working” at this site on her official Kansas medical license renewals in May 2010 or in May 2011, the Times reports

“Dr. Means’s work in Kansas City ended abruptly last month, after she had performed about 50 abortions, half her training goal, when the clinic shifted its focus to trying to stay open under the new state regulations that dictate requirements for the size of rooms at abortion clinics, the stocking of emergency equipment, medications and blood supplies, and ties to hospitals.”

Not only did she fail her “training” at arguably the worst medical facility in the state, her abortion supporters reportedly are not staying with her. The Times said,  “A second effort to establish an abortion clinic is under way, led by a group of prominent abortion rights advocates.The group has raised money but is still searching for a doctor…

The unnamed “prominent” group may just be the TrustWomen political action group, created by Julie Burkhart (formerly George Tiller’s right-hand operative) which has targeted Kansas, and hopes to open clinics.

The president of Planned Parenthood Kansas-Mid Missouri told the Times they have abandoned trying to find an abortionist for their Wichita facility, “after failing to find a local doctor willing to endure the expected harassment.”  Which begs the question, why don’t they want Means, as she is ready, willing and available?

Mila Means trained at Aid for Women clinic, unfit to license

Not surprisingly, the Kansas City, Kansas, Aid for Women abortion mill is reporting the state health department will not grant them licensure under the new law for abortion facilities.

Aid for Women has been the “training ground” for Mila Means, a 57-year-old floundering family practitioner who wants to open a new Wichita abortion facility.

This same clinic has been the notorious breeding ground of misbehaving Kansas abortionists, four of which Kansans for Life ‘outed’ and pushed the state Healing Arts Board to discipline:

  • (1992) Malcolm Knarr, a drug addicted felon who, when losing his license, was being sued for botched abortions every 4 months;
  • (1993) Sherman Zaremski, who fabricated years of false medical records for his partner Knarr, and who performed at least one abortion on young sisters who were being incested (see details here)
  • (1993) Kris Neuhaus, who was twice labeled a danger to the public, (more…)

Door posting tells of Aug. 31 Lawrence PP closing

Now that the Planned Parenthood of Lawrence, near the University of Kansas (KU), quietly closed 9 weeks ago, Kansas is down to 3 abortion clinics–all in the northeast corner of the state.

The Lawrence PP street-mall facility was not licensed or inspected by the state.  It provided contraceptives and chemical abortions with no doctor onsite. The notice on the door attributes its closure to a “lack of need” and recommends the county and KU clinics as well as the PP clinic one-half-hour away.

Too many resident KU students went to this facility, instead of getting help from their family and connecting with sound pro-life physicians.   We recommend pregnant women of any age consult the Pregnancy Care Center of Lawrence, where they can obtain physician-reviewed ultrasounds and assistance for a variety of needs. (see this list for other centers across Kansas)

Kansas’ remaining abortion facilities are: (more…)
