Editorial board members of the Kansas McClatchy newspapers that have fought hard to advance Planned Parenthood interests are furious that the upcoming budget reconciliation indicates the abortion giant will lose state funding this year.
3 months ago, the Governor’s proposed budget was introduced, including the rerouting of Title X federal tax-funded family planning dollars to state clinics that provide family medical services. It reflected the Huelskamp/ Kinzer budget instruction which had been line-item vetoed by abortion-supporter, Gov. Mark Parkinson in 2009 and 2010.
What the Kansas City and Wichita pro-abortion editorialists decried as ‘promoting a lie‘ or ‘pure politics’ was the official comment from the governor’s spokesperson that “Gov. Brownback, along with the overwhelming majority of Kansans, opposes taxpayer subsidy of abortions.”
But it is true! While not directly permitted to cover abortions, Title X funds are underwriting part of Planned Parenthood’s overhead and expenses, and at least part of the salary of any abortionist doing Title X services. As former Texas Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson attested, moneys from abortion and non-abortion are separate only ‘on paper’.
The majority of Kansans do prefer that federal tax monies flow to family-serving clinics for the truly disadvantaged. As undercover videos showed, Planned Parenthood was coaching child sex traffickers how to get low-cost [Title X] services!
Having NEVER publicly reprimanded Planned Parenthood for these kinds of criminal behavior caught on tape, the abortion-supporting editorialists claim, “Blocking funding to these clinics could harm women’s health and lead to more abortions.”
More baloney! Mary Kay Culp, KFL’s Executive Director, rebutted, “The state health clinics that otherwise can get these tax funds provide everything to women that Planned Parenthood does– except abortions– plus health services for the rest of the family.” Culp continued,
“Why would we want to continue to give Planned Parenthood
tax dollars to ostensibly prevent pregnancy,
when they make even more money performing abortions
when that ‘prevention’ fails?”
And how is it possible any longer to swallow the claim that contraception lowers abortion? Abby Johnson admitted she became pregnant 3 times while using contraception and that nearly all the women who came to her Planned Parenthood clinic for abortions were using contraception.
A 2000 study by Planned Parenthood’s own favorite research arm, the Alan Guttmacher Institute, showed over half of women obtaining abortions were using contraception the month they became pregnant.
While maintaining that keeping its government funding will reduce the number of abortions, in just the past twelve years, government funding of Planned Parenthood has more than doubled, with the number of abortions following pretty much the same track.
According to its own annual report, Planned Parenthood received $363.2 million in government grants and contracts in 2008. Clinics run by Planned Parenthood performed
- 332,278 abortions in 2009–the highest total they ever recorded,
- the 15th year in a row the number of abortions has risen at Planned Parenthood, and
- accounting for 27% of the 1.2 million abortions nationwide in 2009.
The editorialists don’t like the truth that Kansans oppose the taking of innocent life and certainly oppose tax moneys underwriting any part of the business expenses of the nation’s abortion giant, Planned Parenthood.
