According to the Kansas state Board of Healing arts, years of illegal late abortions were performed by George Tiller with Ann Kristin (Kris) Neuhaus as the rubberstamp for those abortions.
At the time of Tiller’s murder, and after Larry Buening was forced to resign as director, the Board was actively engaged in legal actions to remove Tiller’s medical license. The Board is now– though twice delayed– scheduled to do the same to Neuhaus.
In a show vilifying Phill Kline and pro-life protestors as a whole, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow interviewed the reclusive Neuhaus Wednesday night.
Neuhaus tries on a new image on the show: that of a gun-toting warrior who left the abortion business because of “post-traumatic stress,” coupled with financial “devastation.” A large file of KFL newsclippings, however, belie her claim that for many years she alerted the public she carried a gun and would use it.
In fact, those clippings are more akin to the image portrayed of Neuhaus during Tiller’s March 2009 misdemeanor trial, when Neuhaus testified as a hostile witness for the prosecution. For the jury, Neuhaus was described as terrified of being attacked by ‘anti-abortionists’ and as working for Tiller because her child had a disability that forced her to close her own clinic.
In Maddow’s template, Neuhaus is a role-model and the the victim of Kline and conservative politicians. Maddow infers Neuhaus has a choice in refraining from active medical practice .
Neuhaus’ documented inability to practice medicine–even under explicit directions from the Board–and her current license restrictions are conveniently omitted.
The state Healing Arts Board erred in allowing Neuhaus to keep her medical license in 2001, after 8 years of professional misconduct which merited her twice being labeled ‘a danger to the public’. Let’s hope they do the right thing this May.
